Summary
The Kalispel Tribe (located in Washington State) wanted to create a gamified phone app to help encourage the learning and speaking of Salish. We utilized the Unity game engine to create a modern, fun app to help build Salish vocabulary.
Discovery
We worked with the language teaching arm of the Kalispel schools to understand what kinds of Salish words are most important to include in the app. We then imagined three different game structures that would provide variety but still allow users to work on core vocabulary skills. It was important that this app display written Salish and play audio Salish provided by native speakers of the language to ensure correct pronunciation of the words.
Find + Build
The Kalispel tribe provided all of the imagery and the audio of the Salish words used within the games. We built out a beautiful app that sourced custom artwork from tribal artists and utilized the Kalispel Tribe’s existing branding. The result was a simple but fun and effective phone app to help their students work on their Salish vocabulary.
