Summary
Healing Local is a community-driven project. The features of this novel directory platform were defined and requested by the holistic health practitioners who funded the project.
Discovery
Healing Local was a custom project initiated by a partnership with local healing practitioners. Since we wanted to meet the needs of these practitioners we went through dozens and dozens of discovery rounds to understand what kind of features a holistic practitioner healing directory would need.
Out of these rounds, we narrowed the directory down to two main featured areas, the public search function where practitioners could list their healing modalities, their healing specialties, and their other areas of capability. And the referral page where practitioners could save other practitioners they were impressed by and make notes on when they would refer patients to these practitioners. We were surprised to find that this practitioner-to-practitioner directory was so high on the list of desiderata for local practitioners.
Through this discovery process, we also understood that practitioners want to explain their practice to other practitioners in language they might not necessarily use to explain it to the public. So on the Healing Local platform, we also have practitioner-to-practitioner messages that are hidden from the public but available on each of the practitioner profiles.
Build
Once we had vetted the features that the Spokane area healing practitioners wanted, we signed off on those features and started building. We used a WordPress front-end coupled with Gravity Forms to make sure that each area of the practitioner profile was easy to fill out and easy to edit so that practitioners can update their information as their businesses change.
